    I learned cursive in elementary school. They only teach kids enough to be able to fill out their food stamp and welfare applications. In my day teachers taught to the level of the brightest kids in the class and not the dumbest. As you have probably noted I write in the Kings English? I learned it from a little blue book, titled Harbrace’s English grammar, as I remember.

    The Cherokee built log cabins and taught the colonists how to build them. The Shawnee also built log cabins, as I understand. You built things out of what resources you had. Birch bark is only in the extreme northers regions and not in the .south. Plains .pIndians built their teepees from buffalo skins because that is what was available to them.

    My great grandfather did of yellow fever in 1884.. his wife had died several days earlier from the same disease. This left my grandfather at age seven without any parents. He would be raised by his older sisters but he had to go to work at a sawmill to bring in the bacon, so to speak. His father was part Indian and had lived through most of the battles of the civil war from Antietam to Appomattox as first sergeant of the Georgia Brigade and had lost four brothers in the war. He was the Sheriff of Charlton County GA when he died at age 48. His wife was of Irish descent- O’Steen.

    The trapping out of the Beaver literally changed the landscape of my part of the world(eastern Montana); most of the beaver had been trapped out by the 1880’s, accompanied by strenuous over grazing by cattle and sheep. Then, in 1887, was the blizzard. During that winter, the cattle ate the last of the grass, then ate the sage brush, then they went into the towns and ate the tar paper off the houses, then they died. Then, during the melt off that spring, with no grass and brush to slow the water, and no beaver dams left in the creeks, the thaw literally changed the landscape, cutting the creeks into deep channels, and creating a great deal of erosion issues that persist to this day.

    Hello, my name Is Dennis Carron, my adopted Menominee name is One Wolf, I am a reenactor in southern Missouri, And I spend a lot of my time at Ft. Du Charters in Illinois. I found this video today on You tube and fell in love with it. My Question is I'm Retired now and want to spend more time in reenacting, But more in the living Historian way. How can I get started into this field of interest?

    • @TheWoodlandEscape
      @TheWoodlandEscape День тому

      Top of the morning Dennis. I’ve been a reenactor for multiple decades and have burnt a lot of black powder in the process. I found having a native persona very educational as I knew lots of European history on this continent, but little of the first peoples history. However, while not losing my interest in reenacting I’ve moved on to living archaeology. I love getting out in the hinterland and immersing myself in the ways of the past. There must be a number of groups that you can investigate, but you’re sort of on the cusp of the part of the world that didn’t see significant settlement until the 19th century, at least west of the Mississippi River. Should you ever get to our neck of the woods you’re welcome to visit Kelly Station.

    This is a well thought out presentation. The attention to living history detail is outstanding. A sincere but serious suggestion: 480p is very low resolution for 95% of devices in use today. So the depth of field in this video blurs, tiles and distracts the eye from an otherwise excellent effort. Particularly with a historical walk n talk you want to captivate your audience and hold them. Nonetheless a thumbs up and I’ll watch part 2.

    Great video! Absolutely wonderful! I love the American Revolution era! I was very astonished to learn about the Hispanic contribution to the American Revolution! Spain or rather a Spaniard Diego de Gardoqui sent the very first foreign weapons to Marblehead Massachusetts in February of 1775 before the American Revolution began! Spanish weapons, Spanish aid was there before Lexington and Concord, before the Declaration of Independence and before America's so called first and oldest ally France! Spain also paid and funded the Yorktown campaign paying both the French and Continental soldiers who hadn't been paid for several months and years causing several mutinees and also paid and refurbished Degrasse's French fleet allowing Degrasse to travel to both the Chesapeake and later Yorktown which Spain also had a huge role in the military planning of Yorktown which is why the Spanish Ambassador was invited to the Yorktown victory celebration of last year 2023! Spain protected French possessions in the Caribbean allowing Degrasse to travel to his destination freely without worry and it was Spanish General Bernardo de Gálvez who was kind and generous enough to release his own French troops under Spanish command and ALLOWED Degrasse to take them to go reinforce Rochambeau at Yorktown! Bernie didn't have to do that but he was very generous! Spain also sent muskets to Saratoga in coordination with the French in 1777! Unbeknownst to many, Spain also sent weapons and cannons and supplies to the American Colonies inside French ships sailing from France! So when the ships arrived everyone assumed the entire cargo was only French lol! Huge mistake but understandable! (And I'd be remiss not to mention the 20 thousand dollars raised by Haym Salomon for Yorktown) Spain definitely tipped the balance in favor of the American Colonies! Without Spain both France and the 13 Colonies could never have won the war! Not without Spain! No Sir! 🇪🇸

      Indeed and native Americans practiced the same moves, more or less, as they did their war dances.

    Thank you Peter for this great walk down memory lane. I was last in Fort Selkirk in 1976 and this brought back many fond memories for me. It's good to see that the place is still in good repair.

      I find it fascinating that it one of those rare historical sites that is still original and on the original site. Glad it brought back some fond memories for you.

    I get the same satisfaction in watching your work as I do with my powder horns. Few people today care about history and the lost ways of earlier craftsmanship.

      Perhaps you’re like me, I can watch someone else work all day long, lol. I reman optimistic that there will continue to be a resurgence in the old way just like yourself. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    I’m genuinely sorry; but , I can’t see difference in the flags. Maybe you could do a show on history of flags that flew over Kelly’s Station. Or at least would have flown 1720 ish - 1790ish

      If you can’t have actual real flags, color drawings of them would suffice

      An interesting idea. For now though, the difference is the Kings Colours does not have the second narrow Red Cross in it which represents Ireland when it joined the United Kingdon in the early 1800’s.
